Project Description:

The health benefits of some micro-and macro-algae ingredients, e.g. essential amino acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, vitamins and minerals have been known for some time and are also used – both in the feed industry and as a dietary supplement for humans. Recent studies of microalgae additionally point to substances that have a protective effect on brain cells and thus are suitable for the preventive or possibly also therapeutic use against neurodegeneration.

The main objective of this project is thus to develop a formulated, high quality dietary supplement (eg an extract) from algae that will produce optimal levels of nutritious and bioactive compounds from different species of algae (micro- and macroalgae) into a single ‘high quality’ dietary supplement “Summarized the product and extended it by the neuroprotective effect on brain cells. The project is being carried out in close cooperation with the University of Bremen (AG Meereschemie (Prof. Dr. Tilmann Harder) and the AG Neurobiochemistry (Prof. Dr. Ralf Dringen)) and the companies MIAL GmbH (Bad Zwischenahn) and CRM GbR (Kiel) ,
